The Lehigh Valley Alliance on Aging website is designed to provide a comprehensive one-stop resource for the region's older adults. It incorporates a benefits-finder tool; life planning information and resources; a directory of local services, rights and benefits; and news geared to older adults.
The Life Links Initiative is holding educational seminars at 3 senior centers, 3 major businesses, and 3 libraries throughout the Lehigh Valley to increase the awareness of meaningful and self-directed choices for work, service, lifelong learning, and community connections.
The Life Links Initiative is developing, training, and implementing a life planning program inclusive of peer coaching and life planning activities at 4 non-profits across the Lehigh Valley. The Alliance has chosen the Pathways to Vital Living curriculum, developed by the Senior Resources Alliance, the Area Agency on Aging of Central Florida, in collaboration with the Winter Park Health Foundation, as the model around which the program needs to be developed.
The Life Links Initiative is educating nonprofit organizations working with older adults on how to prepare for the specific needs (physical, emotional, social, cultural) of this group, in addition to training, scheduling, transportation issues, background checks, etc. that might be required as part of the volunteer commitment. |
| Special Features: |
The website also provides information for professionals on continuing education, Alliance events, research, and offers a list-serve of professional peers for the discussion of issues relevant to meeting the needs of older adults. |

Life Links was developed by the Lehigh Valley Alliance on Aging, an effort that was sponsored by the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. It grew out of an extensive community planning process that involved priority focus committees, a community-wide conference series that highlighted best practices, strategic planning, and a leadership conference. The conference was designed to foster a community understanding of outcomes desired for older adults and to decide upon and adopt key indicators of success to measure improvement in their lives on a community-wide level. The results of the Conference will form a basis for grant making by the United Way, foundations, corporations and local governments. |

Philadelphia - Center for Intergenerational Learning
|
| Program: |
Center for Intergenerational Learning Temple University |
| Web site: |
http://www.temple.edu/cil |
| Overview: |
The Center for Intergenerational Learning is dedicated to strengthening communities by bringing generations together to meet the needs of individuals and families throughout the life cycle. It is a national resource for intergenerational programming. Through the development of innovative programs, the provision of training and technical assistance, and the dissemination of materials, it helps organizations integrate intergenerational approaches into their program services and informs educators, human service practitioners, and policy-makers about the impact of intergenerational strategies.
One of the Center's newer Philadelphia-region efforts is the Coming of Age Initiative that is being developed in conjunction with WHYY public broadcasting, United Way of Southeaster Pennsylvania, and AARP. This initiative is designed to help reinvent retirement by inspiring baby boomers and retirees to pursue volunteer, leadership and educational opportunities and by strengthening the capacity of non-profit organizations to identify and provide opportunities which are meaningful to baby boomers and retirees.
The Center also provides Philadelphia area older adults with opportunities to serve as literacy tutors, mentors, parent outreach workers, oral historians, after-school volunteers, and child care aides. They provide in-home support to: teen mothers, parents who have been reported for child abuse and neglect, families caring for children with disabilities and chronic illnesses, and grandparents raising grandchildren. |
