| Overview: |
The Maricopa County Next Chapter Initiative is a multi-year effort to promote positive aging and build social capital in Maricopa County. It is helping to establish new community-level models that incorporate life planning, civic engagement, lifelong learning, and social connections for older adults. Its development began in early 2003 and included convening a county-wide commission, planning grants and technical assistance for planning. In late 2004, four projects were selected for three-year implementation grants awarded by the Piper Trust. These projects are in Chandler, Mesa, Scottsdale and Tempe. Each project is developing separately, but they are collaborating in four areas: marketing and communications, website development, life planning certification and training, and shared resource and collections. |
| Partners/Sponsors: |
The Maricopa Next Chapter Initiative receives funding and leadership from the Piper Trust and has received technical support from Civic Ventures and Libraries for the Future. At a county-wide level, a 70-member Maricopa County Commission on Productive Aging has provided community participation and input. At the local level, projects are being implemented by a wide range of partners, including community colleges, cities, libraries, senior services agencies, community collaboratives, nonprofits, and advisory boards made up of older adults. |
